She is a music educator, musical childhood anthropologist, an expert in children’s music learning and a researcher specialized in musical identities, interculturality and music, evaluation of musical learning / teaching. She is a writer, presenter, designer and coordinator of European music projects, music entrepreneur and EU qualified trainer for professional qualifications and lifelong learning. She is the founder and president of the Cyprus Music Study and Research Center (CCRSM) (www.ccrsm.org.cy). She just completed 6-year appointment as member of the Editorial Committee of the International Journal of Music Education: Research (ISME).
Dr Pieridou Skoutella holds the Certificate ‘High Impact Leadership’ (with excellence) from the University of Cambridge (January 2020). The Certificate is recognised from the UK Continuing Professional Development Certificate Service.
She is the author of the academic book Small Musical Worlds in the Mediterranean; Ethnicity, Globalization and Greek Cypriot Children’s Musical Identities, initially published by London: Ashgate Press (2015) and in 2020 published by Routledge Press.
She designed Early Childhood Music Education in the Mediterranean Erasmus + KA2 Strategic Partnership (2014-2017) which was coordinated by CCRSM She is the editor and co-author of the online manual Early Childhood Music education in the Mediterranean manual (2016) published by CCRSM and funded by the Erasmus + Program http://www.ecmeinmediterranean.com/index.php/en/. She is the author and co-producer of the multidimensional publication Cypriot Traditional Songs for Children; through Music Education Practices (2008) http://www.ccrsm.org.cy/activities/id/15, which was bought by the Ministry of education of Cyprus for all schools of the country.
She developed and published the audio-visual publication ‘Mediterranean Musical Cradle: Two Songs from Cyprus and Spain’ (2018) under the international trademark MusiChild™. The publication received the logo of the 2018 Year of European Cultural Heritage by the Italian Erasmus+ National Agency. The Spanish media corporation Goiena has devoted an article to it in their cultural magazine Puenta (2019).
Avra was the co-designer of the state-recognized Bachelors of Music Program of Art Music Academy, where she lectured from 2002-2008. She collaborated with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation and the Cyprus Ministry of Education as a designer, music educator and animator of educational programs, concerts and family concerts for young children.
Dr. Avra Pieridou Skoutella has presented research papers and workshops at local, regional, and international academic conferences worldwide, and has published research articles and book chapters, after peer-reviewed processes. She is author of four entries in Sage International Encyclopaedia of Music and Culture (2019). She was a guest presenter and keynote speaker at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal, at the International Convention on Music Education of the Academy of Arab Music in Lebanon, at the IMS International Musicological Society Conference for the Balkans and the Mediterranean and others.
Avra has been Post-Doctoral Research Scholar at the IoE-UCL University of London in music education and anthropology of musical childhood (2012-2014), and a Fulbright-CASP Scholarship recipient at the Eastman School of Music- University of Rochester, USA.
